A MELBOURNE PhD student has developed technology to make broadband internet up to 200 times faster without having to install expensive fibre optic cables.

Thirty-eight solar powered cars are preparing for the start of the World Solar Challenge in the Northern Territory.

The contingent will leave Darwin at 8.30am AEST and take at least three days to travel down the Stuart Highway to Adelaide.

Update:

Competitors in the World Solar Car Challenge will shortly commence the second day of their three thousand kilometre journey from the Northern Territory city of Darwin to South Australia’s capital, Adelaide.

Thirty seven cars from around the world are competing.

We wish all the competitors luck in their solar challenge. The real race to watch is the alternative fuels match, in which up to 20 vehicles have been entered. The one we’ve been watching is the BioBike which has been getting 100kms per 2.2 litres.

Final Update: The Dutch Nuon team has won the World Solar Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide. Well done guys.
